You gotta love Adult Swim

It seems that the folks over at the Cartoon Network don't mind taking a jab at our Bulldog friends down the road. Adult Swim's favorite redneck marine family the Squidbillies remind us that the annoying UGA fan can be found in all areas of society. Even underwater cephalopods.

I guess Cartoon Network doesn't mind giving a shout out to the folks across the street. Back in 2004 during the Yellow Jacket's Final Four run they gave Tech a nice little commercial break bump.

New Blog - IN THE EDGE

When I first started MOTG there were many other blogs in the Georgia Tech family. About the time of the Paul Johnson hiring that family had become a virtual empty nest featuring only two independent non-media related blogs that were still updating. So it's my pleasure to welcome IN THE EDGE to the Yellow Jacket blogging family.

IN THE EDGE was started back in January and although brand new, has brought some good basketball coverage as well as an excellent Day One Practice Report. Justin Smith, the blogs creator and soul writer gets better with each post and appears to be gaining momentum.

His site is simple and calculating in it's design, shying away from the standard list of blog embellishments. He also has a unique insight into Tech athletics that I trust will give his writing something special as time goes on. I thought it would be nice to bring you a little Q&A with Justin so you could get some info straight from the man himself.

Name?
Justin Smith

Connection to GT? Family Connections? Graduate? Just a Fan?
I started my undergrad at Tech in 2003 as the first person from my family to even attend a D-1 school. I graduated my undergrad in the Spring of '07 and started my Masters there that fall. I also worked with the GT Football team in 04 and 06 and the basketball team in 05-06.

What made you decide to start a blog? Do you plan on making the blog more fact based? More commentary? Either/Neither?
I just wanted a place to put my perspective on things. I pretty much eat, sleep, and breathe GT sports so I figured I might as well throw a site out there that shows what I think and hopefully people will read it. I also thought that I could maybe provide a few things other people couldn't with my experiences with the teams and connections in the AA. I hope to remain more fact based, but there will of course be a little bit of bias and commentary thrown in as well.

What will your blog focus on? All Sports? Just Tech Sports? Politics? Entertainment? Etc.
It will be almost exclusively Tech Sports. There may be the occasional random sprinkling of something else, but I hope to keep it an almost pure GT Sports blog.

You mentioned you were in the locker room the day the phrase "Mash On The Gas" was born. Obviously that's a special day for us here over at MOTG. Can you give us some special insight on that moment? Did light shine down from the heavens and angelic voices fill the room?
I remember it starting off as one of D-Mo's better pre-game speeches and when he got to the point he started saying "Mash On the Gas" the players started to yell and all as if he was preaching. I know that I got chills at that moment. Unfortunately the heavens did not part, but I'm pretty sure they came close. I still have my ACC Coastal Champions shirt that the team got with the Mash On The Gas saying on the back.

Tailgate? Where, when, with who?
Tailgating is almost like a new experience for me since I was in the band my first year at Tech and then working with the team. Currently I tailgate between the Fourth Street apartments with the Theta Xi alumni (my fraternity). I usually get there about 2-3 hours before the game depending on the time of the game and if we have anything planned for the tailgate.

Lets say you are elected president of the Tech Nation, if you had all the money in the world, and complete control, give me three things you would change about Ga Tech Athletics in your first 100 days of office. What is perfect as is and should never change?
Honestly most of my complaints are with fans and not the way things are done. I get more aggravated at people not being passionate about their team. However, there are a few things I would change. First of all, I would set up a program where alumni can buy tickets to games for charities. This would help fill seats and go to a good cause. I would also set up a larger marketing campaign around the Atlanta area to not only buy tickets but also wear gold. At this point I don't care what gold as long as it is gold. Oh, and I would stop all the dumb 790 crap that happens during timeouts. Otherwise, I really like most of the things we do at Tech and don't really want to change up traditions too much.

Is Kool Korners the best Cuban sandwich in town?
Sadly I've never been there. Anyone wanna take me out to a lunch sometime? (You pay, of course.)

Everyone else seems to be a UGA fan, why not you?
My wife is actually a UGAg grad and fan, even though she never watches their games and doesn't really say a whole lot about it. To give you the true reason I am a Tech fan is because of my Dad. I remember him being a big Tech fan and I always tried to be like him, especially after he died when I was 10. Over the years I just grew into a bigger and bigger fan and today I guarantee you that I am one of the biggest fans you will find out there.

What is different about IN THE EDGE from other blogs?
In The Edge offers a perspective from someone who has seen all the inner, day-to-day workings of Tech sports. I also am still working hard to get interviews and such from some people you would normally never really hear from in the AA. If anyone has any suggestions for features they would like to see please contact me (xenoabe@gmail.com).

I remember sometime ago when the now defunct RamblinRacket welcomed MOTG to the blogging family, I specifically remember Jeff saying something along the lines of "hoping we can keep it up." I now understand what he means. Jeff recently retired citing that blogging had become a "non-paying second job" and I can see his point. So if I can give Justin and IN THE EDGE any advice it would be to - One, write what you know, and since your not held to the same journalist guidelines of traditional media outlets, write what you feel. Two, don't let it over take your life.

Is Ryan Seacrest a Tech Fan?

Dreamz with a Z

Yes, I admit it.
It is true.
I simply can't help myself.
I have come to terms with it.
I am one of those, an American Idol fan.

OK, go ahead, let out a nice laugh. Feel better? Good. Now, as I was saying...I like the show, and have watched since the first season. But now some interesting information has arisen. Between all the flat notes and Whitney Houston covers it appears that Ryan Seacrest himself may be a Tech Fan?

The story goes like this. Kidfabulous over at The Hive had this to share the other day...

"SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed aka The Wife) and I were watching today's episode of Oprah that she DVR's everyday, and today's guest was Simon Cowell. They had a camera crew follow him to American Idol one day and it showed Ryan Seacrest's trailer, and he was sitting in there hanging out in a Georgia Tech t-shirt."

Well aside from us requiring that Kidfabulous turn in his man card at the door for watching Oprah (which he did voluntarily and without a fight) his story turns out to be correct as you can see from the photographic evidence.

Yes, he's from Atlanta, graduated from Dunwoody High and played safety for the Wildcat football team. He also started as a DJ at Star94 at the age of 16. Even more interesting he did attend UGA for a semester or so before moving to Los Angeles to take a position at Star98 in afternoon drive.

So, whether he's rooting for the Wreck, is just supporting his home state or it was simply laundry day. Major props to Ryan for representing.

You may not like the show, but you got to admit that
David Cook rocked the #$%@ out of some Lionel Richie.

Be careful, this one will stick in your head
and you find yourself forever singing it in the shower.

This is what happens when you stare into the microwave too much.

Fred and Sharon are my new favorite people, I want to party with them.

Just helps confirm my belief that people should NOT do there own writing, design and advertising.

Star Wars through the eyes of a 3 year old

I'm more of a dog person myself....but these human children can be cute at times.
